"A drop of water is worth more than a sack of gold to a thirsty man."
Students of Vardhman Academy, Radha Garden, Meerut decided to share these words of wisdom through a well conducted assembly on 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan-Catch the rain' launched by The Ministry of Jal Shakti to optimise rainwater harvesting and other sustainable water management practices.
The assembly focused on sharing the importance of saving water - one of the mother earth's most significant resources which need our immediate attention. Easy availability of water has made us careless, undermining its significance and resulting in its wastage.
The assembly begins with 'Catch the Rain' pledge to clean up water sources around us and conserve rainwater.
Through a captivating speech, students explained how a normal household wastes thousands of litres of water and rainwater without realising that it would need years to reproduce the same quantity through natural processes.
They also shared how water usage must be optimized to ensure its availability for future generations.
Since our school has installed the rain water harvesting methods according to the government norms and terms which include roof-top rainwater harvesting units and surface run-off rainwater harvesting. The rainwater that flows off in the school terrace gets collected and stored to recharge the groundwater level. Harvested rain water is filtered through several layers of mesh or strainer fixed across the inlet to the storage system and is cleaned on a regular basis. The rain water set-up units satiate the requirements of water for the entire school.
Principal Ms. Rekha Sharma encouraged the students and inspired them to promote the conservation of water and other natural resources. It is a step to encourage an environmentally responsible attitude and sustainable lifestyle in the students.
